I met Hsin-Di and Sara in 2017, the year where the three of us started our Master’s Degree at the Sibelius Academy, in Helsinki (Finland). Each of us from a different continent; Sara from the U.S.; Hsin-Di from Taiwan, and me from Spain, we became soon really good friends. We loved sharing our time together, cooking, talking, sharing different experiences, and we found a lot of support from each other all the time.
We quickly realized that we shared and we had in common two passions: music and traveling. One day during the summer in 2018, since we were good friends, we loved music and we loved traveling, we had the idea to play together some music but we didn’t find any repertoire for this kind of “uncommon” chamber music group ( saxophone, cello and clarinet? ). Nevertheless, a brilliant idea popped up in our heads: why don’t we commission a piece for the three of us from a young composer? This way, we have a new piece to premiere, we help to build up a new repertoire for this kind of chamber music group and we give the opportunity to a young composer in order to compose a piece for us and premiere it.
Eventually we had great support from the Sibelius Academy Foundation and we could commission a piece from Bosba Panh, a young Cambodia composer. In May 2019, we ended up in Cambodia premiering this new piece and sharing lots of experiences with local people there. This moment made us realize how different music and people were around the world, and we eventually fell in love with the experiences we lived during our stay in Cambodia.
Later on, we decided to continue this lovely project from other parts of the world, connecting with new people and cultures, learning and sharing at the same time. We continued contacting new young composers around the world and we received wonderful pieces from Mexican composers such us Daniel Martínez García and Erick Tapia, among others. Thanks to the support from different the Finnish Cultural Foundation and Jenny ja Antti Wihuri Foundation, we planned new projects in Mexico, Guatemala and the U.S. for 2020, but unfortunately due to the Covid-19 situation, these projects had to be postponed. They will happen for sure in 2022!
